Repairing Glass Valuables

Posted on September 22nd, 2015 by Goldman Buyer

Whether it be a vase, a decorative plate or a collector’s figurine, when a glass valuable chips, cracks or breaks it can be heartbreaking. Where certain, more complicated breaks require professional repair, you can fix others yourself. Here’s what you should do.

Is it worth it?

You should first determine if spending time and money to repair the item is worth it. If the piece is part of a collection you have been building for years, the answer is likely yes! Again, evaluate if you will be able to perform the repair properly yourself. If you aren’t confident in your ability to do so, take the broken item to a professional glass repair shop.

Get your supplies.

The most important supply is a special epoxy glue to fix the break. Make sure the glue dries solid, but is also clear so it doesn’t interfere with the look of the glass. A pain scraper can help to apply the glue neatly. In some situations you may also need a glass cutter to cut glass to match if you are putting a new piece of glass in. Be sure to wear rubber gloves during the process.

Replacing the glass if needed.

If you have to use a piece of replacement glass, you must first remove any loose shards or pieces of glass. Make sure the new piece is the right size and shape to fit into the space needed.

When the item you need to repair is curved…

…consider what kind of glass the item is made of. Hand-blown glass cannot be replaced with glue, and trying to repair such items may not be effective. Make sure to do plenty of research on your specific collectible to ensure repairing with glue will yield the results you want.

If you find your valuable is broken beyond repair, don’t fret! Come down to our shop and browse our variety of collector’s items.

Had a Great Experience

"I drove all the way from the south side just to sell my silver to Chicago Gold Gallery because of the knowledge and professionalism I received on the phone. They gave me top dollar for my silver and were so fast and friendly. I definitely recommend this business!"

Can't say enough about this place.

This is the most welcoming, non-pretentious place to do business! I was researching where to sell sterling silver I had and ended up choosing here based on the other great reviews. They walked me through the whole process and answered my questions. I got a great price for my items & will go there again.

Love this place!

Chrissy & Joe are all super friendly and easy to work with. I trust them and they will do whatever they can to help you including giving you advice on what you have or what you should look for. I won't ever go anywhere else and I've recommended it to several friends.

I would do business with them again

I had a large collection of silver coins sitting in my safe deposit box for 15+ years. Chrissy was so friendly and helpful she even gave me advice about coins I didn't know. She was more than happy to help me for over an hour in between taking care of other customers. They really did give me top dollar for my coins. Whether you are new or a pro with coins, I can highly recommend you take them here!

Don't Hesitate to call...

I find that Joe at Chicago Gold Gallery consistently offers and pays more for my coins than coin dealers in Chicagoland. He's very nice and easy to deal with. Don't hesitate to call him and preferably visit him.
