What are the (current) top largest gold nuggets?

Posted on May 9th, 2019 by Joe G

Gold nuggets are a rarity. They can be found in alluvial deposits or in other placer deposits. They can also be found in or close to primary gold deposits, like gold lodes or veins which have been exposed by weather. If you have gold you want to sell, bring it to Chicago Gold Gallery, the gold buyer in Chicago.

Through multiple sources of research, we can figure out the famous, largest named gold nuggets. The following list are nuggets that are all on display and can be visited by the public!

    Brazil: Pepita Canaã

In 1983, miner Júlio de Deus Filho was in the Serra Pelada when he found the Pepita Canaã. This nugget weighs 60.82 kilograms and contains 52.33 kilograms of gold. Banco Dental do Brazil purchased the gold nugget in 1984 and it’s now on display in the Gold Room of the central bank’s money museum.

    Russia: The Great Triangle

Way back when, in 1842, Nikofor Syutkin was in the Miass area of the Russian Urals mountains and found the Great Triangle. It’s gross weight is 36.2 kilograms and has a gold assay of 91%. This means that the fine gold content is 32.94 kilograms. It was discovered in a triangular shape and was dug up from roughly 3.5 meters.

Australia: Hand of Faith & Normandy Nugget

In Kingowner, Victoria, Australia, Kevin Killier found this gold nugget. Discovered in 1980, this gold nugget is known as the largest nugget found by using a metal detector. Currently, Hand of Faith resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Golden Nugget Casino purchased it and it’s not on display in the casino lobby.

In Kalgoorie, Western Australia, Normandy Mining found a golden nugget in 2000. An assay analysis shows that this nugget has a gold purity between 80% and 90%. That’s pretty high. Currently, the Normandy Nugget is a part of the Newmont Gold Corporation and is on display in the museum of Perth Mint.

    California: Ironstone’s Crown Jewel

Known as a single piece of crystalline leaf gold, the Crown Jewel was found in California. In 1992, Sonora Mining Company found the gold embedded in quartz. The nugget weighs 16.4 kilograms.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the nuggets in the world, but it is quite a list. Do you have gold you want to sell for cash? Chicago Gold Gallery is a gold buyer in Chicago that will buy gold in any condition. Check us out today!

    Had a Great Experience

I have dealt in coins and metals since the 80s. Had dealings with many dealers. Got scammed by a few. Chicago Gold is the only one I would recommend to my family or friends. Have your valuables appraised by them before you sell.

    I'll be back

Cashed in some silver coins and received a very fair exchange. Joe and Chris, were very friendly, and comfortable to deal with. Came back with some jewelry, and received a rough appraisal...again no pressure.
